The site is located between Craggy Dome (elev. 6085) and Bullhead (elev. 5925) and has been known as the Peach Orchard because of the yellow buckeye, yellow birch and beech trees growing here. Some trees are over 200 years old and have been stunted and gnarled by wind. Graybeard Mountain is sometimes cloaked in clouds with the summit exposed, giving the appearance of a gray beard around the mountain.
