The Blue Ridge Parkway has awarded a contract to stabilize the failing slope nine miles south of State Route 191 (Brevard Road) at Milepost 400.
The unsafe and unstable slope area has been the cause of a Parkway closure initiated in October of 2009. The notice to proceed has been issued and construction began on April 19, 2010.
As part of the project, the contractor will install gates and chain link fencing across the Parkway just south and north of the slide stabilization construction zone. Parkway management and the Federal Highway Administration have determined this work zone too dangerous for public entry.
Consequently, no visitors or regular park users will be permitted inside the gated enclosure, which includes vehicles of any description, bicycles or hikers. Violators are subject to a $125 fine.
Parkway management appreciates the public’s cooperation while the contractor and Blue Ridge Parkway staff completes this very difficult and dangerous project. Detour signage is now in place along North Carolina Routes 191, 280 and 276 directing visitors around the construction area.
