A Woman’s Work . . . is never done! Two programs will focus on the lives of mountain women this upcoming weekend, June 16 & 17.

Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, visitors can see spinning, dyeing, weaving, gardening and other skills that were a part of Caroline Brinegar’s day-to-day life. Brinegar Cabin is in the Doughton Park section of the Blue Ridge Parkway at milepost 238.5 and is open Fridays thorough Mondays through the summer season.

About an hour’s drive north on the Parkway, on Sunday June 17 at 2 pm, Aunt Orlene Puckett will step out of the old cabin at milepost 190. In a dramatic presentation, “They Call Me Aunt Orlene” researched, written and acted by Phyllis Stump, visitors will hear of the life of the famed mountain mid-wife. She is said to have birthed a thousand babies, but whose own children never lived past childhood. The play lasts about an hour and a half and is presented free of charge through support of the Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway organization. Bring a lawn chair or blanket. The play will be repeated four additional Sundays this season: July 15, August 19, September 16, and September 30.
