The project to repave the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Craggy Gardens area will require temporary closure of the Craggy Dome Parking Area at Milepost 364 from Tuesday, May 18 at 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 20, 2010.
Pavement reconstruction will require completely removing all paving in the parking area by milling operations, removing and reconstructing road base material, and repaving with the base course of asphalt within the Craggy Dome parking area.
This type of heavy demolition and reconstruction of asphalt pavement in the parking area makes keeping the parking area open for the Craggy Dome trailhead highly unfeasible and dangerous for the visiting public.
In the event of bad weather or unforeseen difficulties delaying construction activities, the parking area closure may be extended from May 25 until May 27, 2010. Parkway Management anticipates this temporary closure will allow the parking area to be fully open during the Memorial Day weekend, beginning on Saturday, May 29, and for the remainder of the season.
Parkway management is appreciative of the public’s cooperation in their effort to repave this parking area safely and regrets any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause visitors.
