For June the 13th, 2008 this is the Parkway wildflower report. Mountain Laurel is now in peak bloom throughout the northern section of the Parkway and Virginia, with Catawba Rhododendron still visible but quickly waning. Goats beard is a common sight in many areas. Yarrow and Golden Groundsel are common sights from the motor road throughout the James River area.

Climbing in elevation from James River across Apple Orchard Mountain through the Peaks of Otter, Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel are also nicely on display. In North Carolina, south of Grandfather Mountain through Linville Falls and the Museum of North Carolina Minerals, look for Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel, and Flame Azalea.

Ground cover on trails and roadsides includes displays of Fire Pink, Turkey Beard, Spiderwort, and Viburnum. Visitors heading out of Asheville toward Craggy Gardens for the annual display of Catawba Rhododendron will not be disappointed, although an unexpected road closure means having to hike from the picnic areas to catch the best views.
