General Description
The cardinal flower is a perennial plant that has been known to grow up to 4 feet tall. Native to North America, this plant can be seen in the wetlands, streambanks and swamps along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
The cardinal flower, lobelia cardinalis, blooms throughout the summer months with vibrant, red blooms. It was discovered in Cananda and was sent to France in the 1620s.
This plant received its name because of the flower’s similar color to that of the headdresses of Roman Catholic Cardinals.

Uses
Native Americans used the root of the cardinal flower to make a tea that treats a number of ailments. Teas from the leaves of the cardinal flower can be used to treat bronchial problems and colds.
The cardinal flower is a relative to tobacco but is not used for smoking purposes. It can however be chewed. As a member of the Lobelia genus family, the cardinal flower is considered potentially toxic.
The liquid extract from the flowers has been known to upset the digestive system if consumed.
