Known as the historic “bread-basket of the Confederacy,” the valley extends northward to Harpers Ferry, W. Va., where the Shenandoah River enters the Potomac River. The valley extends south to Roanoke, Va. Possibly named for the Iroquois chief Shendoah, or for a combination of Shawnee and Algonquin words meaning “spruce-lined stream” and pronounced shind-han-dowi.
