Thunder Hill Overlook is probably one of the most visited overlooks along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Even though there is not much here, it affords one of the best long-range views of the Piedmont of North Carolina. From this point, it has been said that you can catch the best sunrise available along the Parkway. It is also further away from many light sources and makes an outstanding stop for amateur astronomers. There is a small trail across the roadway that takes you on a short hike in a pasture with several apple trees near the top of the hill. Other than astronomy, this is a very popular spot to watch fireworks. From here you can see many displays, including both of the one’s at Tweetsie Railroad and in Boone. You can also look over the Piedmont and see fireworks in Lenoir & Hickory.
