General Description
Witch-hazel (hamamelis virginiana) can be found from Nova Scotia to Texas and is native to eastern North America. Often found on shaded hillsides or in deep ravines, Witch-hazel can be easily found on the Blue Ridge Parkway from milepost 130 through milepost 367.
Considered to be a large deciduous shrub that can grow over 15 feet tall, it has bright yellow flowers that cluster together among toothed leaves 3 to 6 inches long. Look for Witch-hazel to bloom in mid fall.
During the fall, fruit capsules form that explode to launch its seeds up to 30 feet.
When other plants are preparing for winter hibernation, Witch-hazel stands apart in the landscape as it maintains a full bloom throughout November.

Uses
Dowsing, also known as water witching, is a non-scientific method people use to find mineral resources such as oil or water. The Witch-hazel plant has forked twigs, so it is often used for divining rods.
Most people are familiar with the name Witch-hazel for its use in a popular astringent. The extract of the plant is used to treat sores, abrasions and other types of wounds.
The Native Americans used Witch-hazel bark and leaves to treat external inflammations.
