General Description
The Red Berried Elder (sambucus racemosa) is a perennial tree or shrub native to the United States. It grows most actively in the spring and summer months and has a moderate life span relative to most other plant species. It has green foliage (not retained year to year) and conspicuous white flowers. At maturity the Red Berried Elder reaches a height of 18 feet.

Toxicity
Although not specifically mentioned for this species, the leaves and stems of most other members of the genus are poisonous. The fruits of many other species have been known to cause stomach upsets. Any toxins in the berries is most likely low in toxicity and will be destroyed when cooked, however, it is not advised to consume any part of this tree.

Uses
The stems of this tree are easily hollowed and can be used to make whistles.
