Wildflowers of the Blue Ridge Parkway - Pinxter Flower

General Description

Pinxter grows naturally along streams and in bogs in light woods. It can also grow in drier, rocky soils. In mid to late spring, flowers are 1.5-2 inches wide. The delicate petals curl back to expose long stamens and styles. Bloom colors range from soft pink to dark pink and are sweetly scented and quite beautiful. Pinxter grows to about 6 feet talls and is more desnsely branched than other deciduous azaleas. Itspreads by underground runners (stolons).
