General Description
Gentian grows up to 60 cm tall and is usually erect, herbaceous, hallow, and somewhat purplish at the base (in the sun). Its leaves are opposite and mostly rounded at the apex. Its flowers are tubular, 5-lobed, blueish-purple, and glabrous internally and externally. They grow to 2.3 cm long and typically closes the apex of the flower. It flowers anywhere from August to November and lives in mostly moist ground along rocky wooded banks, ledges, and thickets. It can also be found along streams and in moist woodlands.

Uses
A tea or tincture of the root is used as a bitter tonic and to stimulate digestion and a poor appetite. An infusion has also been used to treat sore chest, worms, and hemorrhages.
