General Description
Flame azalea is an upright-branched deciduous shrub that grows from 6 to 12 feet tall and is equally as tall as it is wide. It has large, showy, funnel-shaped flowers arranged in clusters of at least 5. Folaige in summer is a medium green and fall color is a subdued yellow to red. The flowers, which have no fragrance, appear before or with the leaves and vary in color from pale yellow to apricot to brilliant scarlet red.
This beautiful shrub creates breath-taking displays on some of the grassy balds of the southern Appalachian mountains. This plant grows best in acidic soil and is extensively planted as an ornamental.
