Bowman’s Root (gillenia trifoliata), also known as Indian Physic or Thoroughwort, is a loose, informal, slender perennial that grows between 2-3 feet and has a woody rootstock. Each crown produces one or more stems. Leaf blades are generally separated into three narrow, toothed lobes. Attractive red calyxes usually persist after the petals have fallen. Te five petals of this plant are projected somewhat irregularly.
Uses
The root, when dried and turned into a powder, was used by Native Americans as a laxative and emetic. Tea made from the entire plant is a strong laxative and emetic. Very small doses are used internally in the treatment of colds, indigestion, asthma, and hepatitis. A poultice or wash can be used to treat rheumatism, bee stings, and swellings.
