Beautiful trees abound at this overlook ranging from oak, birch, ash, poplar, maple and pine. The large mountain in the foreground is Wood Mountain. To the left of the overlook is the Catawba Valley behind the slope of Linville Mountain. Deer are said to travel great distances to this area because there are rocks containing saltpeter. Therefore, the name Deerlick Gap comes from the deer that lick the rocks to obtain the salt. Many hunters hid in this area on their pursuit of venison.
