Music on the Mountaintop Goes Green

August 4, 2009

The Association of Student Entrepreneurs and the Energy Center at Appalachian State University are co-sponsors of Music on the Mountaintop, a music festival that will be held August 29 at the fairgrounds on Roby Green Road off U.S. 421 East in Boone.

The festival will feature performances by Sam Bush, Keller Williams, The Steep Canyon Rangers, Acoustic Syndicate, and Yo Mamas Big Fat Booty Band as well as acts from Western North Carolina.

The festival combines entertainment with an environmental message. It will feature a stage powered by solar energy, recycling and composting, and use of compostable cups and utensils. A “Green Village” will include information booths from N.C. Green Power, Appalachian Voices, High Country Conservancy and others. A cleanup of the New River on Friday, August 28, will be held from 3 - 6 p.m. beginning at the fairgrounds.

The festival recently was recognized by Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine for its eco-friendly focus.

Three stages will showcase various performers. Also on offer: a 35-foot climbing wall, local and organic food vendors, and local craft artisans from the Boone area.

Entry to the festival is $40 for non-students or $35 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at www.musiconthemountaintop.com or at Green Mother Goods and Fat Cats Music and Video in Boone. Tickets also will be available at the festival. The gates will open to the public at the fairgrounds at 10 a.m. with music beginning at 11 a.m.

A portion of the proceeds from the festival will go to the Appalachian Energy Center. The Center at Appalachian State University was established in 2001 to conduct energy research and applied program activities in a multi-disciplinary environment. The Center, working through faculty, staff and students, has programs in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy technology, biofuels, policy analysis, forecasting, and economic development.

Mountaintop Music festival is organized and produced by Yellow Dog Entertainment, LLC, a company founded by Appalachian alumnus Jimmy Hunt.
