Blue Ridge Parkway Wildflower Report for June 26, 2009

June 26, 2009

This is the Blue Ridge Parkway wildflower report for late June 2009. An abundance of rain in the region here in the late spring has given us full creeks and nice waterfalls tumbling down to the Piedmont along with prolific wildflower blooms.

Around Mabry Mill and Rocky Knob in Virginia there is Rosebay Rhododendron and Fire Pink, Deptford Pink, Daylilys, Bowman's Root, Ox Eyed Daisy and many, many others in that section.

In Crabtree Meadows in North Carolina this week you can look for Rosebay Rhododendron blooming from about milepost 324 to 328. Fire Pink, Columbine can be found blooming right at Crabtree Meadows.

At the Moses Cone Memorial Park the trails will show good displays of Fly Poison, and St. John's Wort, Spiderwort, Milkweed, Ox Eyed Daisy, Buttercup, Black Eyed Susan and many others. Walk the Rough Ridge Trail to see Galax, Indian Cucumber Root, Mountain Laurel and Turkey Beard.

Regular updates for color reports will be posted to our web site home page. You can also use the National Park Service information line at 828-298-0398 to keep informed of what's being reported on the Parkway.

For more nature and science information, visit our virtual resource center, http://www.virtualblueridge.com/parkway/general/nature.asp, which will provide you with much more information.
