The Assault on Mt. Mitchell® is a well known century race in the Blue Ridge Parkway region. This year, however, was the first year a story-telling contest was held around the race as a way to share the triumphs, joys, and well, pain, of participating in such a grueling race.
Rob Kortus and Katie Malone tied for first place and will split the $300 prize but the pot has been sweetened to $400 out of fairness, so each will receive $200 - plus more!
"Their stories were absolutely the best, and excelled in different ways. The voters gave each equal acclaim," reports Houck Medford, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation executive director. Honorable mentions are Michael Davis, Stuart Sutton, Todd Newsome, Steve Saunders, and Diane Jackson and they will receive certificates of recognition.
In addition, all contestants will receive a "Share the Journey" T-shirt and Ride Pin. The Assault, now in its 36th year, has become one of the most significant contemporary cultural events on the Blue Ridge Parkway, generating memories and stories about the Parkway which will be perpetually preserved. All stories will be added to the Family Archives of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.
