Introducing one of America’s finest young conductors in André Raphel Smith, who will lead a diverse and energetic program beginning with a 90th-anniversary birthday salute to the great Leonard Bernstein in his Overture to Candide. Pianist Michael Boriskin makes his debut with the ASO in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, and Maestro Smith brings his own distinctive voice to the power and vitality of Aaron Copland’s great American Third Symphony. You’ll certainly recognize the Fanfare for the Common Man finale, and you’ll feel right at home with Copland’s unique blend of American folklore, dance, and epic sonic landscapes.
