Also known as star tickseed, this yellow-flowered plan grows between 2 and 4 feet tall. It is native to slops and dry woods from Kansas to Virginia, and on south to Texas and Florida. The nickname comes from the seeds resembling ticks.
A smaller variety of the flower, called “sunshine superman” grows to around 10 to 12 inches tall. These daisy-like blooms, usually measuring around 1 inch in diameter, have notched yellow rays with orange centers. One can find them blooming profusely from June to September.
