Angelica grows 0.6 to 1.2 meters high and has large (8 – 15 cm long and 4 – 8 cm wide) long-petioled decompound basal leaves that progressively become reduced upward, the uppermost almost bladeless. Generally, plants form a single stem with distinct flattened blades that are divided into three main branches arising from the top of the leaf sheath. The flowers of Angelica grow in umbels that are 4 – 15 cm wide and have small white or yellow-green petals. The fruit is heavily flattened and winged with leaf sheaths greatly expanded over 1 cm.
