Merlefest is an annual Americana music festival held in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. The festival was founded in 1988 as a fundraiser for Wilkes Community College and is named in memory after Eddy Merle Watson, Doc Watson's late son. It now attracts crowds in excess of 85,000 people, making it the largest folk music festival in the United States.
The music is spread across 15 different stages and offers listeners the very best in bluegrass, contemporary acoustic, blues, folk, old-time music, Cajun, jazz, and singer-songwriter combo music. The festival also offers a mix of traditional and contemporary roots music, called "traditional-plus", which is what many consider as a key to this festival's uniqueness.
