7th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition Share the Journey ® Category Theme Announced

August 7th, 2009

(Boone, NC) – “Picnicking on the Blue Ridge Parkway” will be this year’s Share the Journey® theme for the 7th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition opening for registration and submissions on Friday, September 18. "We wanted to announce this specialty category now to give all those shutter bugs time to take their photographs during the height of the Parkway season," stated Mari Jo Turner, the director of development for the category’s sponsor, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation.

In addition to the Share the Journey® category, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation also sponsors the Vistas category that solicits images depicting the natural and/or cultural beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Foundation furnishes a $200 cash award for the Vistas category and $300 for Share the Journey®. 2010 marks the Blue Ridge Parkway’s 75th Anniversary and contest sponsors hope photographers will find special inspiration this year in honor of this historic milestone.

Proceeds from the Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition support Student Outdoor Learning Expeditions (SOLE) at Appalachian State University. Offered by Outdoor Programs, SOLE trips are educational journeys of discovery that take students around the world.

Professional and amateur photographers are encouraged to document not only the Blue Ridge Parkway, but any subject falling into one of the 7 competition categories that celebrate the unique people, places and pursuits that distinguish the Southern Appalachians.

Amateur and professional photographers 13 years of age or older are encouraged to submit to the 7th annual competition prior to its close at 5:00 pm on Friday, January 29, 2010. For complete information on the competition, please visit Virtual Blue Ridge’s Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition site at www.appmtnphotocomp.org.
